
There’s something irresistible and irrepressibly exciting about a contemporary circus performance and Totem, the new show by Cirque du Soleil, doesn’t disappoint.

Last night the audience at the Melbourne Recital Centre was treated to the glorious harmonies and pure tones of the British a capella group Black Voices.

Encompassing everything from the sub atomic matter that constitutes our physical being, to the relationships that give our lives meaning, Am I is an ambitious exploration of what it is to be human.

Not a lot actually happens in Emerald City, which I think contributes to the problem: there are a lot of words to very little action. It’s a fairly shallow treatment of the problem of the highbrow versus the lowbrow.

From its snappy opening with the four leads singing the title song, the audience knows that they are in for a fun show.
