The Melbourne International Jazz Festival opened at The Jazzlab with Paul Grabowsky’s The Gravity Project, so named because different musical traditions and forms are held together by mutual attraction.
As each character emerged, warm recognition was obvious, with a buzz from the audience seated at tables with their wine, tea or coffee, and muffin (available from the back of the hall for a moderate price) before them.
I walked into the State Theatre with high expectations for Oklahoma based on my previous experience with The Production Company’s work, and they certainly delivered with this production.
It is beautifully staged, excellently sung, superbly supported by a first class orchestra and so much fun, you will want to see it again.
Jones opened in a familiar vein, taking an old standard and utilising his marvellous voice to play havoc with the timing of the music and the lyrics. Just in Time was a lovely salute to a past era.
