It says much about the culture of our wonderfully curious arts community that the second programme's opening night was sold out, and this for unfinished shows!

To the opening sounds of a 7-piece band, an apparition appears on stage. She sounds a lot like Liza. She moves somewhat like Liza. There's the Liza laugh.

The problem with a simple premise is that sometimes a production doesn’t stray far enough from this simplicity. There is so much more emotional ground that could have been covered to give the play and the characters more complexity.

The Blue Show didn’t come across as bent or twisted or especially rude to me; in fact this old perve was disappointed.

There should be more of this sort of thing – sharp, well-executed, intelligent and wide ranging satire. This show is an absolute winner with excellent performances and wit abounding.

As the opening work of the MTC’s 2011 season, Don Parties On is a safe choice. Like most of Williamson’s plays, it appeals to middle-class Australians, apparently showing them extreme versions of themselves, or more conveniently, people they know.
