What's On

Beyond the Tracks

Beyond the Tracks shares the extraordinary autobiographical journey of renowned dancer, choreographer and educationist Michael Leslie, who founded Aboriginal performing arts institutions across Australia and helped shape landmark works including Bran Nue Dae. Leslie steps onto the stage to embody his own story, tracing a life forged at the intersection of history, culture and performance.

This multidisciplinary work is a powerful living portrait of an Aboriginal artist, weaving movement, dance, poetry and immersive audiovisual storytelling to explore the pain, resilience and triumph of a visionary who has created pathways for generations.

Co-created with leading Australian artist Ursula Yovich, acclaimed guitarist and composer Ben Hauptmann, writer-composer Robbie Alexander, and director Nicholas Flanagan.

Dancing at Lughnasa | New Theatre
A gifted embroider of words, Friel combines soft lyricism and hard meaning in his play, a tragical comical historical pastoral on a spree and spoiling for a spirited spar.
  • The First Murder | Pinchgut Opera
The First Murder | Pinchgut Opera
In the care of Pinchgut Opera’s director, Erin Helyard, this music, formulaic as it indeed is in some respects, sprang off the page into an experience rich in emotions.
  • Izzard: The Tragedy of Hamlet
    Izzard: The Tragedy of Hamlet
To Shakespeare’s text be true is the obvious goal here, and writer, director and actor have each scored.
  • Gutenberg! The Musical
    Gutenberg! The Musical
As befitting a work honouring the inventor of the printing press, Gutenberg! The Musical! is enamoured of words, drunk on words, intoxicated with text, mad for the metaphor, passionate for the pun.
  • Dirty Rotten Scoundrels | Redfern Lane Productions
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels | Redfern Lane Productions
Unabashedly and unapologetically entertaining, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels delights in its hoax hokum, a whimsical hustle of musical comedy bustle.

    Hamlet | Sh!tfaced Shakespeare
This is not your dear old Grandmother’s Hamlet, it is your drunk Uncle’s, who remembers every Monty Python episode by heart.

  • Retrograde | Melbourne Theatre Company
    Retrograde | Melbourne Theatre Company
The script is based on a true story, although this dramatisation can feel somewhat contrived, with important assertions not interrogated, and credibility stretched as a result.
  • Heathers The Musical
    Heathers The Musical
Capturing the essence of its predecessor, Heathers The Musical is an absurdly comic production that doesn’t just walk the line of polite society but plans to blow it all up with reckless abandon.
  • The Glass Menagerie | Melbourne Theatre Company
This Glass Menagerie is top shelf, and while blessed with an extraordinary cast and the highest of production values, it will not meet with everyone’s measure of how this play should be staged.
