Overall, there is a lot to like about this production of The Merchant of Venice. However, in its earnest desire to do something interesting and have fun with Shakespeare, it overshoots the mark.

Peter Evan's direction is slick and no-fuss, he focuses on the characters and their wish to propel the story. Dramaturgically, this is not man versus world, (nor society) by man versus himself.

This Turandot is as good as it gets. A fabulous production directed and choreographed by Graeme Murphy, a great cast headed by Australia's answer to Pavarotti, Rosario la Spina, and passionate, committed conducting from the Estonian conductor Arno Volmer.
