If you can recall the time where you made your parents drive you to-and-from Saturday sport, every single Saturday, then they deserve a night out (with you) to go and see this quaint modern Australian musical.
In Every Single Saturday we see four different parents explore their own flawed personality and parenting, all on the sidelines of the football field where they watch their kids play. There's the coach Carlo (Mr Pizza!) who struggles to accept that his son is more suited to the dance studio then the football field; Liz, a lonely single North Shore mum who signs up to be the (annoyingly-over-organised) team manager, equipped with the Magpies introductory booklet and organic oranges; Sandy, a fitness-freak mum who refuses to feed her child for fear she may become overweight and bullied, just like she was; and Neil, a very fancy orchestra conductor who flies in from Paris, France, to work in Sydney but also father a neglected child.
The story is simple and easy, the characters are fun and relatable and the musical numbers are cute and catchy. As I said, your parents will enjoy this one (mine did) – it's so relatable and will have you giggling and clapping along (as many of us were). My first adventure across the other side of the bridge, further into the north than I might have ever been before, was totally worth it. The people there are so friendly (the audience members were so willing to swap and shuffle seats so everyone was in the perfect spot) and Glen Street has a great, warm and inviting theatre set-up.
Every Single Saturday features only four characters and a killer band you can just make out in the far left-hand corner. These four actors are more than enough to fill the stage and bring the story to life. The performances by all: Maria de Marco, Christopher Horsey, Scott Irwin and Katrina Retallick, were great, especially when they not only acted, but sang and even danced in unison. This Les Currie production of the Australian musical exemplified the triple-threat culture of Australian stage performers, which is something to be most proud of.
