Brisbane Festival has announced prominent theatre director David Berthold will join the team as a specialised independent performing arts curator.

Following the appointment, Brisbane Festival is putting a call out to independent and emerging artists interested in having their work considered for the 2013 program.

Mr Berthold will curate an extensive program of work by independent artists with a focus on contemporary performance. The program is designed to provide a solid platform for artists to experiment with various art forms supported by Brisbane Festival.

Brisbane Festival Artistic Director Noel Staunton said he was thrilled to have such an esteemed industry heavyweight join the team.

“I am anticipating great things to unfold under David’s curatorship; this is a new initiative and one that has the potential to uncover some amazing talent from Brisbane, across the country and internationally,” Mr Staunton said.

“David’s contribution to the program will build on the artistic strength seen at Brisbane Festival in previous years, and is set to both excite and challenge audiences.”

The current Artistic Director of La Boite Theatre Company, Mr Berthold has directed for most of Australia’s major theatre companies, as well as internationally. Mr Berthold was also the Associate Director of Sydney Theatre Company, Artistic Associate of Queensland Theatre Company and Festival Director of World Interplay 2007, the world’s largest festival of young playwrights. He recently directed Philip Ridley’s Tender Napalm, which created a stir at Brisbane Festival last year.

Mr Berthold said he was honoured to spearhead such an integral part of Brisbane Festival and was looking forward to seeing what works and ideas were submitted.

“This is an important initiative that supports artists whose work might not otherwise be showcased by an international arts festival such as Brisbane Festival,” Mr Berthold said.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Noel Staunton and the Brisbane Festival team to see how far we can push the boundaries and give audiences an exciting and bold program in September. La Boite has taken its work in nurturing independent theatre very seriously, and this is a terrific extension of that work.”

Brisbane Festival is seeking expressions of interest from independent and emerging artists that would like to have either existing or new work considered as part of the program in September 2013.
