The 9th Annual Australian Cabaret Showcase is set to present a new line-up of talent across Australia this December.
Produced by Your Management International, the event provides the opportunity for cabaret and musical theatre talent at all stages of their career, to showcase their abilities in front of an audience and before a panel of judges including some of Australia’s leading entertainers and industry professionals.
This year’s event goes national with heats in Sydney, as well as in Melbourne and Gosford for the first time. Last years 8th annual event saw the Festival Prize winner Toby Francis go on to write and perform his one man show, under the direction and mentorship of David Campbell, at The Adelaide Cabaret Festival, The Noosa Long Weekend Festival and for the first time at The Melbourne Cabaret and Brisbane Cabaret Festivals.
The recently announced inaugural Ballarat Cabaret Festival offers another chance for the Festival Prize winner to take to the stage, and The Ron and Margaret Dobell Foundation will provide a cash prize of $1000 for the Festival Prize winner and $500 for the Showcase Prize winner, while also continuing their work supporting Melbourne artists by travelling and accommodating the Melbourne heat winner to and from the Sydney Grand Final event. Prizes at this years annual event will include the opportunity for the winner to perform their show at the 2012 Adelaide Cabaret Festival with the support of newly appointed Artistic Director Kate Ceberano, also The Noosa Long Weekend and Melbourne Cabaret Festivals, all with accommodation and flights included. Winners also receive photographic and design packages courtesy of Blueprint Studios and a Sydney season produced by Your Management.
The Executive Producer of the annual event, also General Manager of The New York Musical Theatre Festival Jeremy Youett said, “In my 5th year producing the Showcase, I’m excited to announce heats in Melbourne and Gosford for the first time, as well as some incredible new and returning major partners. Providing new talent the opportunity to perform and be discovered by the Australian industry is something I strongly believe in and the continued support of some of the countries greatest Music Festivals is an integral part of the events success. I’m looking forward to continuing the development of the annual Showcase with an opportunity to add an international engagement to the prize list for the Showcase winner in 2012, during our 10th year.”
Guest judges this year include legendary Australian entertainer David Campbell, Noosa Long Weekend Festival Artistic Director Ian Mackellar, Melbourne Cabaret Festival Artistic Directors Neville Sice and David Read and acclaimed industry guests including Chloe Dallimore, Margi De Ferranti, Les Solomon and Phil Scott.
Each performer is asked to perform an eight minute set with interlinking dialogue. Winners from every heat are then invited to perform in the Grand Final in Sydney on Friday 23rd December at Sydney’s acclaimed live music venue Notes.
This year’s competition is open to people at all stages of their career but places are limited.
