The Arts Centre, in conjunction with the Australia Council, is launching a national two year $300,000 Music Theatre Development Program that aims to discover Australia’s next stage hit. The program will provide financial and artistic support for up to five new music theatre performances to be developed to workshop stage and showcased at the Arts Centre in January 2011.
Announced at the annual Green Room Awards ceremony on Monday, the Arts Centre’s Chief Executive Judith Isherwood said the grant was a fantastic opportunity for both artists and audiences.
“There’s so much talent throughout Australia that needs to have the chance to step into the limelight. This new music theatre program will enable that talent in flourish in a truly creative arena, ultimately giving contemporary audiences a firsthand involvement with the development of a new work. We are very excited to be able to bring this opportunity to the stage.”
The funding for the two-year program aims to uncover original contemporary music theatre projects with a compelling and original theatrical premise, from small scale, grunge and rock music theatre to contemporary performances. They need to be original Australian compositions with a creative team attached and suited to a venue up to 400 seat capacity.
