Hear your opera brought to life by Australia’s finest.

ChamberMade and Victorian Opera announce a New Opera Ventures Australia (NOVA), a new program that aims to commission, workshop and produce new Australian opera and music-theatre.

NOVA is calling for scores, concepts and submissions to be considered for inclusion in a series of readings of new opera and music-theatre works which will be presented in 2010. Whether in the form of a score, script or detailed concept, the key is to reveal a fresh and strong foundation in music.

The work will be assessed by an esteemed panel including ChamberMade’s new Artistic Director, Victorian Opera Musical Director Richard Gill, ChamberMade’s Music Associate Brett Kelly, plus Robyn Archer, Matthew Lutton, Gerry Brophy, and Caroline Stacey.  The panel will meet in mid December to read and listen to all the submissions, and will create a shortlist to workshop in 2010.

“Victorian Opera and ChamberMade believe that it is critical to open up an arena for people to submit new ideas and compositions.  Together we are interested in presenting a diverse range of contemporary work, from classical contemporary through to experimental, including explorations in new technologies.”  ChamberMade Chair Karen Hadfield.

“It is important to find out what Australians’ have brewing in their back pockets – NOVA will reflect the enormous variety of cultural contexts at play in Australian music-making today.” Victorian Opera Musical Director Richard Gill.

Applications open from 31 August 2009 and close 9 November 2009, 9:00am.
