The Australian Dance Council - Ausdance NSW, has announced the recipients of the inaugural Dance Space Residency Program 2008.

This new Ausdance NSW initiative is funded through the City of Sydney Cultural Grants and Sponsorship program and offers Dance Space Residencies for seven of Sydney’s independent dance artists over a 13 week period at Queen Street Studio.

In the past two years significant dance spaces in the inner Sydney area closed their doors, leaving local dance artists facing high rental costs and competitive scheduling. The residencies will provide selected dance artists with studio time of up to 4 weeks free of charge for creative development, rehearsal of work, work in progress showings, mentorship’s and the development of their dance practice.

Director of Ausdance NSW, Cathy Murdoch states; “The program is a direct response to the ongoing challenge of access to affordable and appropriate spaces to create and rehearse work and unless increased levels of dance space provision are secured, the independent dance sector will not have the facilities and infrastructure to grow and sustain the art form into the future. The Dance Space Residency Program offers a vital opportunity for developing and strengthening dance practice and presentation.”
