In its 20th incarnation the Brunswick Music Festival celebrates in style with a line-up of the world’s best in world, folk and roots music, a spectacular opening night concert, classic films played to contemporary scores and as always the Sydney Road Street Party to get it all underway.

“From humble beginnings as a small community celebration of the diversity of cultures within the Moreland community, the Brunswick Music Festival has evolved to become one of Melbourne’s most enduring music festivals without losing its unique identity.  This year’s line up is a cracker” John McAuslan, Festival Director.

Opening night
To open the show we are delighted to present the musicians and dancers of Xianyang who are visiting as part of a cultural delegation from our sister city in China. This will be an extraordinary performance of the music of one of the largest of our Asian neighbours. The musicians and dancers of Xianyang will perform on the same bill as Zulya & the Children of the Underground. One of the most intriguing and unique acts in Australia. Zulya’s music defies pigeon holing, but has been described as “somewhere between Kurt Weill-ish Euro-Cabaret jazz and lullabies constructed to tear your heart out.” Their most recent album, 3 Nights, received the 2007 ARIA for Best World Music Album.

Sydney Road Street Party
Gets it all underway with a mini festival of roots and world music on six stages with San Lazaro, Brahim Benhim and La Kasbah, Andy Alberts, Yung Warriors, Plastic Palace Alice, Zydeco Jump; Peter Grey and Mister Whiskers for the kids and many many more. In keeping with the Sydney Road family friendly vibe, this year alcohol will only be permitted at licensed venues meaning that kids of all ages are entertained appropriately. A large children’s program in two venues, with over 30 bands on 5 stages, the theatre of the street and the fun of the fair, it’s a treat of a day.
