Great Wall of BooksAfter their return from a two-month residency in Macau, Melbourne based contemporary arts company WELL return to Melbourne to kick start 2008 with their latest project Great Wall of Books, which will open in the heart of the CBD at Federation Square on Saturday 5 January until Thursday 10 January. Opening Night performances will take place once the sun sets and the moon rises featuring sensory theatre performance by local performance artists Our Planet Enterprises, performance incorporating Noh theatre and Japanese drums by Dances with Wolf Spiders and old world musical storytelling by local outfit Old Tar Gang.

5 metres tall and opening out to over 11 metres wide, Great Wall of Books is a free public contemporary art project inviting communities, artists and the general public across Victoria to add to its pages. It is simultaneously a large-scale sculpture, interactive installation, exhibition space and outdoor performance space for scheduled performances for all ages.

With the help of ground based and aerial performers opening and closing its pages, over the 5 days watch the book be transformed into - a wall of art (whose very building blocks are books), a gallery space (that can be walked around in), a place to write or draw, or even watch video art on the cinema screen on the top level.

Recently back from Macau, these responses are hand bound and catalogued, becoming a part of the ever-evolving library that will eventually traverse the globe.

Artistic Director, Dario Vacirca shares his vision of the project. “The Book aims to build bridges across cultures through the sharing and recording of personal stories. This concept of sharing community voices acts as a snapshot into the mind of the cities and sites in which the Book inhabits, a touring archive of the thoughts, feelings, dreams, poetry, fears and hopes of people across the globe”.

Be a part of this unique project before it continues it journey of collection around the world.

“One of Australia’s most unique and innovative new works, an intelligent and important work … continues to resonate for the many who saw it.” Victoria Raywood Artistic Director, Big West Festival
