Learn some tricks of the trade with Sista She

Hip-hop comedy duo Sista She will host a special MC’ing workshop at Footscray Community Arts Centre (FCAC) on Sunday 7 October. This is the final workshop in a series of outstanding Workshop Intensives presented by FCAC, providing a unique opportunity to learn from some of Australia’s finest talents. The series has included a ukulele workshop by ukulele comedienne Shirley Billing, Life Drawing by quirky visual artist TextaQueen and a Songwriting weekend workshop by singer-songwriter Rebecca Barnard.

Sista She will bring their energy, enthusiasm and teaching talents to FCAC in a day-long intensive workshop aimed at young women aged 16 years and above, giving them the chance to join a new generation of Australians speaking through the spunk and verve of an MC’s mike. The workshop will cover rapping, microphone technique, stage craft and song-writing.  “Even if the women are not into hip-hop, they can still get a lot from attending our workshops because they are all about self confidence and appreciation” they said. “Being able to witness young women gain confidence and grow through creative output is a special part of what we do”.

Candy Bowers (Rasheda EDA MC) and Sarah Ward (Sheila MC Eila) first stepped onto the stage as Sista She in 2002, incorporating the aesthetics of hip-hop, comedy, theatre and dance into a host of live performances around the country. In the last few years the comedy duo have performed at the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Brisbane Powerhouse, the Big Day Out, Adelaide Cabaret Festival and have just returned from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Sista’s bring a unique voice to the Australian hip-hop music scene which has been traditionally dominated by a boy’s club vibe. ‘We have been able to influence the way some people have thought about, not only women’s involvement in hip-hop, but in rhymes specifically addressing female issues and concerns. Considering that this voice is still very much underground, I think we’ve got a long way to go before there is equality between male and female output’.
