2007/2008 Composer Development program

The Symphony Services Composer Development program provides a major training opportunity for young Australian Composers. Symphony Services Australia is now calling for applications for the 2007/2008 Composer Development program.
This is a major development activity for young Australian composers in collaboration with Orchestra Victoria and with assistance from the Australian Music Centre.
The Symphony Services Composer Development program was first offered in 2003 and is designed to provide training to talented composers in writing for orchestra. Dr Richard Mills AM will work intensively with a small number of composers, leading a series of workshops with sections of the orchestra. Sessions will include playing and discussion of orchestral excerpts to develop participants’ knowledge of the orchestra and orchestral writing techniques.
Composers will work towards completion of a short work of professional standard for performance by Orchestra Victoria in July 2008. Workshops will take place in Melbourne from November till December culminating with a performance of their new work in July 2008.
Richard Mills is one of Australia's most sought after composers and music directors. He is Artistic Director of West Australian Opera, Artistic Consultant with Orchestra Victoria and Director of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Australian Music Program.  He has received many commissions from Australian orchestras and his work is frequently performed around the country and internationally.
Applications for the Composer Development program will close on Friday 19 October 2007.
