Stephen SondheimPeter Cousens’ Kookaburra - The National Musical Theatre Company today announced that music theatre composer and legend Stephen Sondheim, will be traveling to Australia especially for the opening of Kookaburra’s production of COMPANY.
An Audience With Sondheim on Friday 6 July at 2pm at the Theatre Royal, will be a once in a life time opportunity to share some wonderful moments with Sondheim as he is interviewed about his life, his extraordinary career in music theatre as well as witness some fabulous performances of his work. There will also be opportunities for questions from the audience.
“It is over 30 years since Stephen Sondheim has been to Australia,” said Peter Cousens Artistic Director and CEO of Kookaburra. “We are thrilled that he is coming to see Company and that he has so generously given his time to Kookaburra. The Audience with Stephen Sondheim will be an opportunity for many of us to ask those questions we have always wanted ask but were never in the same room to do so.”

COMPANY is the second production of Peter Cousens’ Kookaburra - The National Musical Theatre. Starring David Campbell as Bobby, it will play at the Theatre Royal from June 27 for a limited six week season. Directed by Gale Edwards, Stephen Sondheim's COMPANY is an honest, witty and sophisticated look at love sex and marriage in the city that never sleeps, New York. It is about Bobby, a single man celebrating his 35th birthday, and the five married couples who are his best friends.
Stephen Joshua Sondheim (b. March 22, 1930) is widely seen as his generation's leading writer of the stage musical. Described by Frank Rich in The New York Times as "the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in the American musical theater," he is one of the few people to win an Academy Award, multiple Tony Awards (seven, more than any other composer), multiple Grammy Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize. His most famous scores include (as composer/lyricist) A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, A Little Night Music, Follies, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins, Passions, Bounce, as well as just the lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy.

With special guest performances by some of Australia’s leading musical theatre talent.
