'Night, Mother at Sydney Fringe Festival 2025

Pulitzer Prize-Winning and Tony Award nominated play set over the course of a single evening between a mother and daughter confronting buried truths and the quiet burdens carried by women.

‘Night, Mother is about the feeling of helplessness when circumstances take the driver’s seat.

For the mother, Thelma, it’s the pain of not being able to make her daughter feel better about her life or talk her out of ending it.

For the daughter, Jessie, it’s the despair of having no control—over her dysfunctional family, her failed marriage, her failed motherhood or losing control over her own mind and body as she battles relentless seizures.

The script is based on a true story, although this dramatisation can feel somewhat contrived, with important assertions not interrogated, and credibility stretched as a result.
