Lord Arthur Savile's Crime

Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime is based on an 1890s story by Oscar Wilde.

Lord Arthur Savile is engaged to the lovely Sybil Merton. His future mother-in-law, Lady Julia Merton, is less than enthusiastic about the match and employs her fortune-teller,

Mr Podgers, to read Lord Arthur’s palm to find out if there are any indiscretions in Arthur’s past and future. The fortune-teller confidentially tells Arthur that he sees murder ahead! Feeling duty bound and desiring a blissful married life, Lord Arthur decides – of course – that the only logical course of action is to get this dreadfully embarrassing act out of the way before his wedding in three weeks’ time. But staging the perfect murder proves not nearly as easy as he thought!

The script is based on a true story, although this dramatisation can feel somewhat contrived, with important assertions not interrogated, and credibility stretched as a result.
