Speakerbox: Musical Improv Comedy Based on True Stories

What happens when you mix audience stories, quick wit, and top-tier musical talent?

Speakerbox — the musical you didn’t know you needed until we made it up on the spot. This high-energy improv troupe transforms your real-life tales into fully improvised musicals, complete with harmonies, choreography, and ridiculous plotlines.

Every show is a unique mix of chaos and craft, fuelled by the crowd and performed by some of Sydney’s sharpest improvisers. Fresh from monthly packed shows at Improv Theatre Sydney, Speakerbox brings three back-to-back nights of musical madness to Sydney Fringe Comedy Festival at Factory Theatre. No script, no safety net — just music, mayhem, and magic you’ll only experience once.

A gifted embroider of words, Friel combines soft lyricism and hard meaning in his play, a tragical comical historical pastoral on a spree and spoiling for a spirited spar.

The script is based on a true story, although this dramatisation can feel somewhat contrived, with important assertions not interrogated, and credibility stretched as a result.

This Glass Menagerie is top shelf, and while blessed with an extraordinary cast and the highest of production values, it will not meet with everyone’s measure of how this play should be staged.
