What's On

The Approach

a sixty-minute jewel of a play…[a] deftly written triumph” The Guardian ★★★★

“Psychologically layered” New York Times

“A transfixing riddle, rationing out clues and folding in on itself artfully” The Irish Times

Three women, reminiscing on a shared past over a cup of tea - but, did it really happen the way that she said? Or are these old friends weaving new lies? As minds change and allegiances shift, Anna, Cora and Denise spill the tea - but something just isn’t adding up. With sell-out performances in Edinburgh and Dublin, The Approach now comes to a Sydney stage at Marrickville’s Flight Path Theatre from 17 August to 2nd September.

The Approach is a showcase piece by award-winning playwright Mark O’Rowe (Howie The Rookie, Terminus). O’Rowe has created three roles of incredible dexterity, where nothing is what it seems and unsaid words scream over the top of seemingly banal pleasantries.

Deborah Jones (Jellyfish, Scarecrow, Nell Gwynn, Little Miss Sunshine, The Women) will take the reins on this Sydney premiere. The Approach stars actor and expert dialect coach, Linda Nicholls-Gidley resuming her place on stage after her recent turn as writer and performer of Ladybird Ladybird. Together with Lindsey Chapman (Private Lives, A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Sarah Jane Kelly (Home and AwayThe Night Alive), this triumphant trio will tease out the truth amongst a tangle of liquid lies.

The Approach presented by Vox Theatre in association with Dead Fly Productions plays at Flight Path Theatre in Marrickville from 17 August to 2nd September.

The script is based on a true story, although this dramatisation can feel somewhat contrived, with important assertions not interrogated, and credibility stretched as a result.

This Glass Menagerie is top shelf, and while blessed with an extraordinary cast and the highest of production values, it will not meet with everyone’s measure of how this play should be staged.
