Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes

Following Melbourne Theatre Company’s critically acclaimed Australian premiere season, Belvoir presents the Sydney premiere of Hannah Moscovitch’s Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, an incisive #MeToo-era take on the archetypal student-teacher romance, from 2nd June to 10th July 2022.

Jon is an award-winning writer, but it doesn’t seem to have made him happy. His third marriage is going about as well as his first two, and his university job is mainly teaching ‘creative writing’ to the self-absorbed. But this year there’s one student who seems to be worth his attention.

Annie’s smart, spontaneous, and knows Jon’s work backwards. In her bright red coat she certainly stands out – it feels like their affair was written in the stars.

One day the fires will die down. But who gets to write their history? What was going on, exactly?

The script is based on a true story, although this dramatisation can feel somewhat contrived, with important assertions not interrogated, and credibility stretched as a result.

This Glass Menagerie is top shelf, and while blessed with an extraordinary cast and the highest of production values, it will not meet with everyone’s measure of how this play should be staged.
