Beethoven’s Pastoral

Known for unearthing composers and rediscovering unknown historical chamber versions of the classics, the Australian Haydn Ensemble (AHE) presents Beethoven’s Pastoral for one very special performance on Sunday 13 June at Riverside Theatres.

The program will bring to light two of the greats: Beethoven’s Pastoral and Mozart’s Haffner Serenade, along with a melancholic and moving string sextet by Boccherini, in a brilliant celebration of chamber music, hosted by Riverside Theatres.

The eighteenth-century arrangement of Beethoven’s grandiose masterwork for full symphony, the Pastoral presented in this program is a vibrant and passionate reinterpretation of this dramatic work that will capture imagination and reinvent it as a septet, in an intimate and intense setting.

Mozart’s Serenade No. 7 or the Haffner Serenade as it is often called, is one of his most well-known and frequently performed works. Masi’s chamber arrangement was published in the early 19th century as part of a set of popular Mozart symphonies for the same instrumentation as Watt’s arrangement of the Beethoven. Masi’s arrangement reflects Mozart’s own shortened version of the Haffner Serenade that omits three of the original movements.

AHE also performs a beautiful, dark and moving string sextet in F minor by Luigi Boccherini. Boccherini takes the listener on a journey full of drama, melancholy and dance – a characteristic of his music that makes it a listening pleasure.

Repertoire:

Boccherini String Sextet in F minor Op.23 No.4

Mozart Haffner Serenade K. 250 (arr. Masi)

Beethoven Symphony No. 6 in F major Op. 68 Pastoral (arr. Watts)
