What's On

Whiteley

In 2019, Opera Australia will introduce a brand new production to honour the tumultuous life of iconic Australian artist, Brett Whiteley.

Inspired by the intimate relationship between Whiteley and his creative life, director David Freeman and composer Elena Kats-Chermin will celebrate one of Australia’s most highly-regarded artists in a hybrid performance that brings together Whiteley’s most famous paintings, contemporary opera and immersive digital design.

This biographical narrative will bring the same warmth, wit and poignancy as Australia’s troubled yet talented, artist, rebel, and icon.

The script is based on a true story, although this dramatisation can feel somewhat contrived, with important assertions not interrogated, and credibility stretched as a result.

This Glass Menagerie is top shelf, and while blessed with an extraordinary cast and the highest of production values, it will not meet with everyone’s measure of how this play should be staged.
