Moby Dick

Seymour Centre presents a Sport for Jove production of

MOBY DICK

By Orson Welles

Directed by Adam Cook

The Seymour Centre and Sport for Jove are proud to present one of the defining tales of English literature, Moby Dick, in the Seymour Centre’s Reginald Theatre this August. Compressed from a 900-page novel to 90 action-packed minutes on stage, this is a chance to see and hear a defining work we all wish we’d found the time to read!

Directed by Adam Cook (A Doll’s House and Much Ado About Nothing), Moby Dick is a work of overwhelming imagination about the great struggle to defeat the nothingness – the whiteness – the encroaching terror of why we are alive, what our faith is worth and how we perceive the world.

In this stripped back production, played as a vibrant, thrilling, transcendently energetic poetry and percussion slam, the haunting language and extreme physicality of this iconic text is brought to vivid life by a cast of actors even more varied than the ramshackle crew of the novel.

Aboard the hauntingly atmospheric ship, the Pequod, an extraordinary adventure unfolds as the single-minded Captain Ahab pursues his revenge against the infamous white whale who bit off his leg. This great American classic is a hymn to the sea, to whaling lore and the self-defeating prophecy of revenge.

Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick is an example of the very greatest poetry ever put to paper – exquisitely playful, funny, barbaric, soul-shunting and desperate. Legendary playwright Orson Welles’ ingenious adaptation brings to life this epic story where poetry is the captain.

With Danny Adcock, Rachel Alexander, Mark Barry, Badai Maftuh Flynn, Tom Royce Hampton, Jonathan Mill, Wendy Mocke, Francesca Savige, Vaishnavi Suryaprakash and Bryden White-Tuoey.
