The Flick

A part of the 2018 Seymour Season

Hilarious and ineffably touching... This lovingly observed play will sink deep into your consciousness.”

New York Times

Outhouse Theatre Co (DRY LAND- 5 X Sydney Theatre Award Nominations) and Seymour Centre will present the Sydney premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning smash hit, THE FLICK by Annie Baker.

Annie Baker is one of the most visionary voices of her generation. Following their acclaimed collaboration on The Aliens (Old Fitz), Outhouse Theatre Co will reunite with Baker and director, Craig Baldwin, for the long-awaited Sydney premiere of a work that has made a huge impact in New York and London.

In a run-down Massachusetts movie theatre, three underpaid employees bond over film trivia, cleaning techniques and minor embezzling. The movies showing are no match for the tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks that play out in the empty aisles. With humanity and humour, The Flick builds into a heartfelt cry for authentic connection in a fast-changing world.

Winner of a slew of major awards, including The Pulitzer Prize for Drama and an Obie for Playwriting, The Flick has helped establish Baker as one of the most exciting writers working today. When the play premiered at The National Theatre in London, a spokesperson said, “It’s unprecedented for a work by a writer new to the NT to sell out so quickly.”

“Funny, heartbreaking, sly and unblinking. The Flick may be the best argument anyone has made yet for the continued necessity and profound uniqueness of theater.”

New York Magazine

THE FLICK will star Mia Lethbridge (Ensemble's Barefoot In The Park, Ch 7’s A Place to Call Home, ABC’s The Slap) Jeremy Waters (4 Minutes 12 Seconds, Sydney Theatre Award Nominee –The Aliens and Jerusalem), Matt Cheetham (New Theatre’s Birdland, Red Line Productions’ Kayak) and introducing Justin Amankwah.
