What's On

Carmen, Live or Dead

Carmen is complex. She is irreverent. She is salacious. She is bold. She is intersex. And it is the last day of her life.

One of Australia’s most diverse and exciting theatre and cabaret actors, Natalie Gamsu, stars in CARMEN, LIVE OR DEAD, a fascinating, edgy and entertaining story of identity and survival. Presented by Oriel Entertainment Group, Progeny Pictures and Orange Sky Creative, this extraordinary original new work will have its official premiere at the Hayes Theatre Co for a strictly limited season from 28 April 2018.

CARMEN, LIVE OR DEAD is the extraordinary story of Carmen Frida Leon Davidovich, the fictional Love Child of Frida Kahlo and Leon Trotsky. She is irreverent. She is salacious. She is bold. She is intersex. And it is the last day of her life. At the end of her life, Carmen takes us on a reflective journey of discovery – an orphan, a refugee, a hermaphrodite, a human.

Natalie Gamsu (Strictly Ballroom, Ladies in Black) has teamed up with New York writer Craig Harwood and ARIA nominated and Helpmann Award-winning actor and musician iOTA (Hedwig & The Angry Inch, Smoke & Mirrors) to create this original and enigmatic new work.

CARMEN, LIVE OR DEAD celebrates difference, embracing the feminine and the masculine with joy and life. A story brimming with unyielding authenticity, humour and grace, this is a unique, gripping theatrical experience that is moving and thoroughly liberating.

Directed by Shaun Rennie (I Am My Own WifeOnly Heaven Knows) with musical direction by Andrew Kroenert (Dream Lover), Gamsu will be joined on stage by Stefanie Jones (The Sound of Music, Once).

This Glass Menagerie is top shelf, and while blessed with an extraordinary cast and the highest of production values, it will not meet with everyone’s measure of how this play should be staged.
