The Ball RoomPlay is the the highest form of research, according to Einstein, and Plato said: Do not keep children to their studies by compulsion but by play.

The creators of The Ball Room – part of Darebin Arts Loud Mouth program – are channeling the wisdom of these old cronies with their immersive show in which children lead the way because they are finally the experts at something: play. At the same time it’s a democratic space because adults are encouraged to play alongside them.

It’s like being let loose in an intergalactic dream with friendly space helpers.

Wandering into the first chamber, we are introduced to the simple wonder of things to do with millions of ping pong balls by "play facilitators". We are then we’re lead into the main ballroom of the Northcote Town Hall where there’s different sized metallic balls to ping around, trays of clay to roll into little balls and eventually an inflatable igloo to crawl through. But it all happens in visionary little stages, with performers coming in and playing strange string instruments, or dancing with balls for heads.

It’s a surreal, reflective world which captures children and adults alike in a fantastical bubble, and as a parent its priceless to see the wonderment and curiosity captured on little one’s faces.

The Ball Room is a gorgeous adventure to take in our fast-paced days of screens and gadgets which reminds us to slow down, make play out of simple everyday objects and delve into the endless world of children’s imaginations.
