Flipside Circus offer something very unique in their latest production, titled Identité, which comes to life this week at Brisbane’s Judith Wright Centre. The youth-based circus company features fourteen incredible performers in the hour long show, tumbling, tricking and trapeze-ing with breathtaking skill, but most of all providing non-stop entertainment from the very first “hup”.
There is something magical about watching young people perform, the audience becoming privy to the mix of vulnerability, excitement and determination which cannot help but shine through their bright faces. The theme of this show, discovering identity, is fitting to this experience, each performer giving the impression that through developing their circus craft they are also shaping that malleable and budding idea that is themselves, in the most positive of ways.
The talented artists who perform Identité range in age from eight to eighteen, but this should not put into question the professionalism of this show. First rate tumbling, including wonderfully choreographed group pieces, is seen throughout, the audience audibly gasping and cheering as bodies fly through the air. Immense grace and strength is demonstrated by performers on the trapeze, tissue and lyra, moments which seem timeless pass too soon leaving the audience wanting more. Of course there is also circus favourite juggling, with at times more balls flying through the air than can be counted and some wonderful clowning, perfectly performed with equal measures of grace and humour.
It is a powerful thing to see young people in such command of their bodies, even if they have not yet come to a full reckoning with their own “identities”. The feats of strength and flexibility seen in Identité would inspire even the most sedentary to get moving and in even the most afraid the courage to try. Throughout the performance there is a distinct sense of trust and camaraderie within the group, necessary for commitment and safety of all involved, and it is a nothing but a pleasure to watch them work together.
Undeniably containing some of the next up-and-comers of the circus and performance industries, Identité is a little slice of home-grown circus magic that you definitely don’t want to miss out on.
