Sydney's New Theatre launches The Spare Room

New Theatre is launching The Spare Room – a new initiative generously supported by Arts NSW to provide assistance to the Sydney independent theatre community.

The Spare Room takes New Theatre’s commitment to nurturing and supporting theatre artists to a higher level. As the independent theatre sector in NSW continues to grow, there is an increasing demand for well-resourced performance spaces that are both accessible and affordable, to enable theatre makers to create and thrive.

The Spare Room will open New Theatre’s doors and facilitate co-production with independent companies, providing a platform for the creation of challenging and stimulating contemporary performance by both emerging and established artists. It promises to be an exciting addition to the independent seasons presented by Griffin Theatre, Darlinghurst Theatre, Tamarama Rocks Surfers and Seymour Centre.

“The independent theatre sector is bursting with talented, creative people willing to take artistic and financial risks in order to produce work they are passionate about and want audiences to see,” says Theatre Manager, Luke Rogers. “The Spare Room will offer a great adjunct to our own productions and open up New Theatre to a wider pool of artists and audiences.

“We’re looking for bold and challenging projects that provoke, stimulate and entertain, with a preference for new Australian works,” says Rogers. “The Spare Room season is open to all possibilities and genres: plays, music theatre, physical theatre, devised theatre and interdisciplinary performance, and we can’t wait to see what people pitch to us.”

New Theatre is now accepting submissions for The Spare Room and the season will be announced in early March. Four projects will be selected to participate and will be presented throughout the year in tandem with New Theatre’s own productions. Full details can be found at www.newtheatre.org.au
