David Gray AM, Chairman of Perth Theatre Company, yesterday announced Melissa Cantwell’s appointment as Artistic Director. Melissa is currently Associate Director at the Company, a position she has held since Feburary 2007.

Together with the Board, David is enthused about Melissa’s appointment and looks forward to seeing her carry on Alan Becher’s enthusiasm to challenge, excite and entertain audiences and creates new opportunities for WA artists.

“I am confident Melissa’s passion and dedication to local actors and creatives and the WA theatre industry in general will ensure a vibrant and challenging season of excellent theatre,” says David.

“Perth Theatre Company has experienced significant change within the Company and Melissa is the ideal candidate to lead Perth Theatre Company on its next journey.”

Melissa Cantwell is an award-winning playwright and director. She holds a Bachelor of Communications (Film) and Bachelor of Performing Arts (Directing) from WAAPA.

Continuing the legacy of the late Alan Becher’s strength, commitment and vision for Perth theatre, Melissa’s first task as Artistic Director is to finalise the program for the 2009 subscription season.

Perth Theatre Company General Manager Tony Bonney is excited to work with Melissa and to continue to lead the Company in the creation of new, energetic and adventurous theatre.

“This is the first time in over 20 years a West Australian has been appointed artistic director at a theatre company in this town. Our Company has always been the leading supporter of WA artists and creatives and we see in Melissa the continuance of this proud tradition as we prepare for our move into the new theatre complex in Northbridge,” says Tony.
