Out of the Box Festival Spreads Its Wings

QPAC’s highly anticipated Out of the Box Festival is back in 2008 and it’s set to be bigger than ever – literally.

So popular has Out of the Box become that this year Australia’s leading arts festival for three to eight year olds will expand across the entire cultural centre at South Bank, from QPAC to the State Library, the Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art.

For six days from 10 to 15 June, QPAC's Out of the Box Festival for 3 to 8 year olds at the Cultural Centre will enliven the entire arts precinct with creative, exciting and memorable arts experiences for children, their families and teachers.

The 2008 festival caters to all artistic interests from painting and performance through to animation and music making through a diverse and dynamic events program which includes in-theatre performances, workshops, concerts, exhibitions and a host of free activities.

Festival Artistic Director Mark Radvan said this year’s festival aims to fire the imagination and ignite creativity.

“Featuring some of the best local, national and international artists and a broad range of hands-on, interactive activities, Out of the Box provides children the opportunity to explore their creativity, have a tremendous amount of fun and access cultural experiences unavailable anywhere else,” Mr Radvan said.

“The diversity of activity at this year’s festival also enables children and their families and teachers to tailor their experiences across the precinct according to their respective interests.

“For example, if a child has a keen interest in books and reading, they can see author Pat Flynn bring to life his acclaimed book Beeware at the State Library, visit Books and Writers in QPAC’s Lyrebird restaurant where they may meet a writer and then attend The Writing Post where they can write their own story and mail it.

“Similarly, if it’s the magic of music that children love, they can experience the orchestral wonder of The Little Mermaid, explore the underworld world with the award-winning Coco’s Lunch at Sounds of the Sea and then make their own music at a Young Conservatorium workshop.

“Ultimately the festival is about enabling children to have lots of fun while also introducing them to exciting arts experiences that inspire their imaginations and stimulate their creativity.”
