SpiegelworldAustralian theatre producer Ross Mollison today announced that the New York City 2007 summer season of Spiegelworld has smashed the sales results of the previous year.

The three month live entertainment season in Mr Mollison’s spiegeltent came to an end last weekend. Over 150,000 people attended New York’s newest festival on the East River, located at the old Fulton Fish Market under the Brooklyn Bridge.

Mr Mollison said today, “For the second year in a row, our variety-burlesque show Absinthe sold out, and our new production La Vie, co-produced with Montreal’s hottest young circus theatre company The Seven Fingers, was also a critical and box office hit. This year our expanded Spiegelworld site included a 200-seat restaurant and an outdoor dancefloor featuring a line up of New York’s greatest DJs each night.”

Spiegelworld heads to South Beach Miami next, where it will open on December 20 and play for two months. A new production, The Gazillionaire’s Late Nite Lounge, which was trialled in New York, will also premiere there on January 6.

In the next few months, Spiegelworld is planning to announce seasons in another two cities in the United States, which will complete an annual touring schedule right through to the return to New York City for the 2008 summer. There are plans to increase the New York season next year to five mainstage shows which will play concurrently in two spiegeltents, as well as a ship moored alongside the East River site.

Mr Mollison said today, “Our desire to see our Spiegelworld seasons expand into their own fully-fledged cultural festivals is becoming a reality. Our gross was just on $3.5million in 2007 up dramatically from $1.5million in 2006, so we clearly feel this is an event that New Yorkers have fallen in love with.”
