Some of the most inspiring fringe and independent theatre companies in Sydney and beyond converged at the SBW Stables Theatre last night for the launch of the 2007 Griffin Stablemates season.Griffin Theatre Company artistic director Nick Marchand said the third Griffin Stablemates season offered a unique insight into the talents and sensibilities of the next generation of Australian theatre makers.
“The work is innovative, bold and confronting,” Marchand said. “These four new plays, nearly all of them Australian premieres, offer the perfect mix of humour, provocation and adrenalin. It’s a volatile mix, guaranteeing thrills throughout the year.”
The 2007 Stablemates season begins with the Australian premiere of Red Light Winter, a stunning new work from American playwright and Pulitzer Prize nominee Adam Rapp. This love triangle spanning two cities will “amuse, shock and devastate” says Time Out, New York.
Next, the Olivier Award nominated Dinner by Moira Buffini is an acerbic comedy about a group of friends notionally brought together to celebrate a literary success. But as the host reveals each course, this gastronomical evening begins to take a sinister twist.
In the disturbing urban drama Mercury Fur, two brothers survive in a lawless and ravaged city by bringing life to their clients’ darkest fantasises. Provoking and unsettling, this is the Sydney premiere of a controversial play from the writer of The Pitchfork Disney, Philip Ridley.
Finally, the season finishes with the world premiere of Tiger Country from Griffin resident playwright Jonathan Gavin. This wickedly black comedy follows a family’s Christmas celebrations and the growing conviction that one of their number might have stuffed more than just a turkey.
New in 2007, theatregoers who purchase a ticket to any preview performance at Griffin Stablemates is entitled to a $10 ticket for any B Sharp, The Old Fitzroy and Darlinghurst Theatre Company preview performance.
