It was announced today that visiting British actor Ralph Fiennes will be one of the presenters at the 2006 Sydney Theatre Awards, to be held on Monday January 15 at the Statement Bar beneath the State Theatre. Fiennes is in Sydney to perform in First Love, one of a series of Samuel Beckett plays, as part of the Sydney Festival.

Sydney theatre luminaries who will join Fiennes as presenters at the awards include playwrights David Williamson and Katherine Thompson, designer Jennie Tate, director Jason Langley and actors Caroline O’Connor, Andrew MacFarlane, Michelle Doake, Darren Gilshenan and Tina Bursill. Performances at the awards will be provided by Lucy Durack, Drew Forsythe and Terence Clarke, and Amanda Harrison, Nick Christo, Michelle Doake and Nick Simpson-Deeks.

The Sydney Theatre Awards, created to celebrate the strength, quality and diversity of theatre in Sydney, are presented by a group of leading Sydney theatre critics, The Sydney Reviewers.

The 2006 nominations are spread across 30 different productions in both the mainstream and the independent theatre sectors.

A new category has been added this year to honour the much-loved and respected Sydney theatre publicist Judith Johnson, who passed away in October. This award, titled the Judith Johnson Award for Best Performance in a Musical, will be presented at the ceremony by David Johnson and Katie Spanton, Judith Johnson’s husband and daughter.
