To celebrate the unveiling of Sydney’s new home for contemporary arts in January, CarriageWorks will swing open its doors with a weekend of FREE events, performances, tours and forums.

Developed by the NSW State Government through Arts NSW, CarriageWorks at the former Eveleigh Rail Yards at Wilson Street is a bold new centre committed to the nurturing, development and presentation of contemporary arts.

Starting with its cathedral-style foyer, the physical beauty and scope of CarriageWorks is inspiring. Visit the centre on January 20 and 21 for its Open Weekend and enjoy these FREE activities:

Guided Tours: Be one of the first to see the magnificent new theatre spaces, rehearsal rooms and scenery construction workshops at CarriageWorks (11am & 2pm daily).
Forums: Join in one of four panel discussions on contemporary arts and dance, the rail history of CarriageWorks, and the adaptive re-use of the building (12pm and 1pm daily).
Exhibition:  Explore the building’s history at the Trains of Treasure audio-visual display.
Testimonial Booth: If you worked on the site during its years as a railway carriage workshop, come and record your story.

The open weekend will also include the following FREE activities:

Rosie Dennis: Sydney performance artist will be showing her new work
Legs on the Wall: This interactive workshop with aerial and physical theatre artists will teach visitors how to fly in a harness.
Erth: Watch rehearsals of their new show Gondwana. Plus dinosaurs, gargoyles and a puppet guide from their installation, Garden, will inhabit the building.
Aerialize: Watch aerial acrobats train on the trapeze, silks, lyre and Spanish web.
Performance Space: Installation by various artists

NSW Arts Minister Bob Debus officially opened CarriageWorks on Friday, January 5, 2007, with the centre hosting four dance events as part of the Sydney Festival.
