A Chinese Christmas

FooFrame Productions in association with bAKEHOUSE Theatre Co is thrilled to present Trent Foo’s A Chinese Christmas, a heartwarming celebration of family, heritage and the generational ties that connect us, from 10th to 20th December.

Directed by Monica Sayers (Women on the Verge – Hayes Theatre Co, Circus Cabaret Tricks & Tricksters - NIDA, Rockstars - NIDA) and featuring a stellar cast of three, A Chinese Christmas mixes English and Chinese, myth and memory, live traditional music and text, to explore the complexities of growing up Chinese in Australia and the unique result of blending two cultures.

It’s Christmas Eve in Australia, and Heepa is hosting the annual family Christmas Party. Only problem is… his grandma isn’t coming. In a last-ditch effort to win her back, Heepa travels to yōudū 幽都 — the Chinese underworld — with his trusty summoning book, hoping to convince his ghostly ancestors to use their magic to help him. But to earn their blessing, he must face his past, confront his future, and reckon with the complicated relationship he has with his Paw Paw.

A Chinese Christmas is a heartwarming, nostalgic, and often silly tale about a boy and his grandmother. Blending English and Chinese, myth and memory, live traditional music and text, it delves into the complexities of growing up Chinese in Australia and the unique result of blending two cultures together. A love letter to the ones who raised us—a celebration of family, cultural identity, and the ties that connect us across generations.

Filled with wide-eyed nostalgia and festive hilarity, don’t miss this poignant love letter to the ones who raised us.
