Sexy. Sad. A conflicting, painful joy. JOY is the story of Paul, a gay man in his 50s, trying to untangle the question: why am I the way I am? He drifts down memory lane searching for answers. What were the moments that shaped him—the good and the bad, the joy and the sorrow, the wounds and the warmth? The desires and contradictions that pushed him to seek joy in places the world often dismisses as shameful or disrespectful. At its heart, this is Paul’s dilemma: the clash of family, love, pain, and joy. Set in Darlinghurst, the piece speaks to the heart of queer Sydney, drawing on the area’s layered history and ongoing dialogue about belonging and transformation. Starring Charlie Dashford and John Michael Narres, the work embraces the raw intimacy of The Loading Dock, unfolding like poetry that is lyrical, restless, and achingly human. ‘JOY’
