PROMISE & PROMISCUITY: A New Musical by Jane Austen & Penny Ashton

Huzzah! Clear your dance cards because global hit Promise & Promiscuity: A New Musical by Jane Austen and NZ’s Penny Ashton is finally romping into Sydneyshire.

‘Catch Promise & Promiscuity… Lots of fun. Thank me later.’ Colin Mochrie

"Ashton is a consummate performer. She has honed the characters superbly with an extraordinary range of facial expressions, gestures, stance and amazingly different voices." Australian Stage

Flushed by twelve years of sold out successes from Edinburgh to Adelaide to Toronto comes New Zealander Miss Ashton’s collaboration with Jane Austen (deceased). In 2025 Penny is celebrating the 250th anniversary of Austen’s birth with an Australian tour.

‘Pride & Prejudice gone wild in the best way.’ Rip It Up (Adelaide) ★★★★★

Join Elspeth as she battles literary snobbery, cousin Horatio’s digestions and her mother’s nerves, armed only with a blushing countenance, excellent ukulele skills and being quite bright, you know… for a girl. In this hilarious, one-(freakishly talented)-woman show, Penny tackles all of Austen’s characters with song, dance and appalling cross-stitching.

Having been performed over 600 times, Promise and Promiscuity has gathered a veritable slew of awards and glowing reviews;

Best Theatre, Week Three Adelaide

“A razor-sharp turn of phrase” ★★★★1/2, Adelaide Advertiser

“..sparkling” ★★★★ The Scotsman

“..sparkling”“..brilliantly performed, absolutely hilarious, and by far the best one-person show I’ve ever seen..” Mooney on Theatre, Toronto

    The script is based on a true story, although this dramatisation can feel somewhat contrived, with important assertions not interrogated, and credibility stretched as a result.

    This Glass Menagerie is top shelf, and while blessed with an extraordinary cast and the highest of production values, it will not meet with everyone’s measure of how this play should be staged.
