A humorous, heartfelt recollection about growing up in the church and discovering your sexuality by way of gyrating, dildos and anime boys. Miriam has spent much of her Singaporean youth as the ultimate Jesus fangirl - A hymn belter, a bible verse spewer, a Sunday School regular. Then she is awakened. Hot cartoon men make her think salacious thoughts. Dildos feel good actually. The woman in school with the gorgeous shoulders and icy glare makes her feel a certain way but she can't call it love because her church was part of a campaign supporting the banning of queer-inclusive sex education in Singapore. Suddenly, Miriam finds it hard to love a place that can't love her in return. From abstinence-based sex education, to the latent homoerotic tension of Singaporean girls' schools. From the evangelical church’s growing influence in Singapore to not-so-secret secret lesbian aunts in the family. Singapore-based actor and writer Miriam Cheong reflects on growing up in a religious household and tries to reconcile her sexuality with religion and belief in the premier of the brand new one-woman play 'Sunday School of Hard Knocks’ at the Melbourne Fringe Festival.
