King of the pop parody “Weird Al” Yankovic will be venerated in song and comedy, as Melbourne Fringe hosts the inaugural season of “Weird Al” Piano Bar.
Running across 6 nights of the October festival, audiences will be able to sing, laugh and praise his holy name along to live music with Weird Al’s lyrics projected on the big screen. Older members of the congregation will remember Weird Al classics such as the Madonna parody Like a Surgeon and the Coolio recreation Amish Paradise. Younger worshippers will be familiar with the Pharrell Williams knock off Tacky, whilst Miley Cyrus contributes Party in the CIA. From spuds to Spider-Man and aluminium foil to Star Wars, “Weird Al” Piano Bar promises to be your silliest night out ever. Leading the worship on the mic will be multi award-winning performer/comedian/TV writer Joshua Ladgrove who finally has the opportunity to fuse both his competing passions of comedy and music by paying tribute to one of the best to ever do it. Ladgrove said ‘Weird Al is a legend in two domains; comedy and music. When I was 15, I listened to Running With Scissors for a whole year straight. Though my mum will never forgive me, hopefully this puts me in good stead to lead this one-of-a-kind Weird Al sing-a-long.’ Presiding over the fan fervour will be MC, pianist and producer Joshua Cowie, well known for his work in engaging audiences and emerging creatives. Recent credits including producing shows with Baker Boy and King Stingray, along with judging duties with both the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Class Clowns and Melbourne Magic Festival competitions. ‘I’m so excited to be able to bring the holy trinity of entertainment into one event - Music, Comedy and PowerPoint Presentations!” said Cowie. “Weird Al” Yankovic is one of the all-time greats of the comedy music genre. He’s sold well over 10,000,000 records, had multiple Gold and Platinum albums, won 5 Grammy awards, had a Number 1 single in Australia and guest starred on both The Simpson and The Muppets. Biographical parody film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story staring Daniel Radcliffe as Al was released in 2022 to rave reviews, including 8 Emmy nominations. Along with the sing-a-long, the night will also feature gags and games, and of course the bar will be open! “Weird Al” Yankovic will not be making an appearance.
