Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a musical that has charmed audiences across the world with its balance of humour and heart-warming moments. It is fast-paced and wildly funny, yet touching, with a vibrant score.

An eclectic group of six kids enter the spelling championship – an opportunity of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing "ding" of the bell, that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion.

The musical explores social connections, puberty, family, love and isolation, through the innocent lens of youth; mirroring the realities of grown-up life.

Our boutique production, an internationally recognised approach, allows the performers to play characters who are the same or similar in age, and to explore individual acting challenges. Student performers can extend their skills, through this more complex and difficult performance work. Students in Years 10 to 12 auditioned for the production in November 2022. With only a small cast, it meant not every student could be successful. This gives students an authentic learning experience, being similar to auditioning for external acting opportunities.

ELTHAM College encourages prospective student families, theatre aficionados and the wider community to join us for a memorable evening.
