What's On

Let's Take Over

What does the next generation of art look like? Darebin Arts Speakeasy gave ten emerging artists aged 15 - 25 the keys to Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre for Let’s Take Over. They’re taking over and bringing you something you’ll never forget on 19 and 20 February.

Experience their participatory artworks—from questions about perspective, colonisation, language, climate anxiety, mental health, gender and what it’s like to be a teen in 2021. You’ll witness everything from film, performance, poetry, grocery shopping—heck, you might even be able to do some laundry!

Let’s Take Over participants have been given professional development through a series of guest speakers over several months, a budget and support to create and produce their own monumental arts event.  All participants are paid and develop skills covering marketing, budgeting, programming and curation.

Participants come from different worlds with their own unique skill sets, art forms and life experiences. The 2021 Participants are: Amarachi Okorom, Anna Charalambous, Casper Plum, Elijah Eastley, Guy Ritani, Kenita Bush, Lauren Rosenberg, Lulu Fitz, Michaela Mulenga and Rhoda Makur.

The event is the first cab off the rank for the 2021 Darebin Arts Speakeasy season and it sold out within 24 hours of release. Extra sessions on Sunday 21 February have been created for VIP and media. The 2021 season will launch in early Feb and is bursting with some Australia’s most unique makers, including projects which were unable to proceed in 2020 due to COVID-19.
