Brisbane SciFi Theatre Festival

The Future Of Theatre Is Here

— The Brisbane Sci-fi Theatre Festival returns with a jam-packed program in 2020. With our expanding range of performances, join us as we explore the outer-most edges of entertainment innovation on stage.

Australia’s only science fiction theatre festival returns for its second year, hosted in the heart of Brisbane at TAFE Queensland’s South Bank campus, on the Norman Price stage.

In this truly otherworldly five-day festival, we celebrate local emerging and established artists who present new theatrical works exploring the possibilities of science fiction and popular culture in a live theatre environment.

From April 1st to April 5th, the festival includes an array of mainstage productions, works in development, readings and live roleplaying experiences. Attendees are encouraged to dream with the dreamers as we shift the creative tide that is pulling Brisbane into the outer edges of entertainment innovation.

Festival Director, Chelsea O’Brien notes “ This festival encourages makers and artists to bring theatre into the 21st century. We’ve had a lot of fun watching shows experiment with technology, lighting and an array of innovative ways to immerse the audience in the strange and wonderful sci-fi world they’re creating.”

With Matilda award-winning lighting designer Geoff Squires behind the desk, this festival promises to rival the sheer brilliance of the cosmos!

This year prepare to expect a reimagining of your favourite classics: such as War of the Worlds and HP Lovecraft’s The Colour Of Out of Space.

As part of our 2020 vision, we have also included shows that push the boundaries of conventional theatre. AIWA by the AIWA initiative brings an intimate theatre experience for a single audience member, exploring the realm of Artificial Intelligence. It Came From Somewhere Else by Edge Improv delves into interactive improvisation, providing a performance full of skilful improvised comic relief. Constellations by Nick Payne is a show about boy meets girl, again and again and again. Other performances include the sequel Galax-she 2 by returning troop Thicc Shake; while the show A Moon With a View, is suitable for all ages by local independent theatre maker Calum Johnston; and a second helping of last year’s work-in-development turned 2020 mainstage cabaret show, Gary, featuring some new songs and the same ambience loved by last year’s audiences. Also included in the program are two double bill work-in-developments. From a special D&D live experience and theatre to cabaret and Artificial Intelligence, The Brisbane Sci-Fi Theatre festival has something for everyone

Audience Quotes 2019:
