What's On

Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg

Following the success of the Melbourne Ring Cycle in 2016, Opera Australia is proud to present the Australian premiere of a new production of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. A co-production with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, this new production by celebrated director Kasper Holten is as grand and extravagant as it is charming.

The mastersingers are holding a high-stakes singing competition, and Walther needs to win. He’s an outsider, an upstart, and he doesn’t know the rules. But to win the hand of his beloved Eva, he must sing the greatest song ever made.

Enter Hans Sachs: mastersinger, cobbler, and the beating human heart of this opera. He offers the newcomer all his warmth and wisdom, knowing it will cost his own chance at love.

After his triumphs with the Ring Cycle, Pietari Inkinen returns to Australia to conduct the magnificent score with a cast of world class singers in this grand scale opera. Hear the Wagnerian forces of Orchestra Victoria and special guests in these performances, exclusive to Melbourne.

Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg is a glowing testament to the wonder of human artistry, where there are strict rules in art and in love.
