Short+Sweet Perth is back in 2022, again on the Main Stage at the excellent Subiaco Arts Centre.

Short+Sweet Perth is an open access competitive festival of 10 minute plays. It brings together a broad range of artists – professional performing artists working alongside talented enthusiasts, as well as artists with experience and expertise in other art forms trying their hand at theatre.

It commences with a series of heats and finishes with finals comprising the top 10 plays as voted by our audiences and assessed by industry judges. It is great theatre for participants and audiences.

Short and Sweet is 20 years in the making across a variety of countries and nationalities. This powerhouse festival started in Australia 15 years ago and has offshoots around the world: Australia, Dubai, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore and Zimbabwe.

Last year it made its Perth debut, under the Festival Director Michael Wood, who lead a hard-working team of Festival staff to support and help create an exciting programme of 10 mini plays per session.

Tonight anticipation was high, after an excellent initiative season in 2021 which drew good crowds, enthusiastic applause and audience voting.

It must be said that tonight’s offering was a very mixed bag, three plays stood head and shoulders above the other offerings.

In the first set before interval, VENT was a highlight. An abbreviation of the word ventriloquist, it explored a first date scenario where the male date brings along his alter-ego/puppet in a show he has been performing onstage. It soon becomes apparent this “dummy” is no longer in the control of his master puppeteer. The consequences were very funny and the finale a clever twist.

ADAPT OR DIE. “Sex, love and natural selection in the world of bower birds.” A wonderful vehicle for the marvellous mime, mimicry and clowning by Aryan Gupta and Lucy Nunn. Thoroughly enjoyable.

THE NEXT STOP. “On a short ride two strangers discover the bond of a lifetime”. A lovely interlude for those of us that truly believe that the personal love we shared with our closest dog is unbreakable despite death. Amusing and ultimately very moving.

Tomorrow afternoon (3.15pm) brings the first entry into the Short +Sweet portfolio by the internationally-acclaimed West Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

A highly anticipated treat to be sure.
