Hayes Theatre Co has announced a stellar cast and creative team for the world premiere of Australian musical EVIE MAY. Helpmann award winner Amanda Harrison (Wicked, Les Miserables, We Will Rock You) will perform the titular role, coming directly from her most recent performance in The Rocky Horror Show. Rising musical theatre star Loren Hunter (Boy From Oz, Georgy Girl, Strictly Ballroom) will play the younger Evelyn May, with Keegan Joyce (Rake, Please Like Me, Big River) playing the role of Cole. Cabaret and musical theatre star Tim Draxl will play Heaney, while Bishanyia Vincent ( Starfish, Galilee) and Jo Turner (Antony and Cleopatra, The Merchant of Venice) round out the cast.
Acclaimed director and choreographer Kate Champion will direct, with book by Hugo Chiarella and score by Naomi Livingston. Steven Kreamer as Musical Director, with Max Lambert as Musical Supervisor. Lighting Designer Sian James-Holland and Set and Costumer designer Anna Gardiner also join the team.
Set in 1966, on the evening of the last ever Tivoli performance in Sydney, veteran star Evie May recalls the events that lead her from obscurity in regional Western Australia to the bright lights of the Australian variety circuit. Forced to run away at an early age during WWII, Evie has spent her life trying to escape the pain of the past. As the final curtain comes down on the Tivoli - and everything that has come to define her - she struggles to find her place in a world that no longer values her.
EVIE MAY offers a compelling take on memory, motherhood and the fascinating characters of Australia’s rich theatrical history.
“We have been excited to see many new Australian musicals playing to packed out houses across the country over the last 12 months,” said Lisa Campbell Chair of Hayes Theatre Co. “From small stages to large commercial productions. It solidifies our well-held belief that there is a huge demand to see new Australian work presented. Evie May continues this as a fresh, new piece about a legendary time - the age of the Tivoli. At the Hayes we have a commitment to annually presenting new Australian work. We think it is a vital to continue this support of new writers and fulfilling our audience’s appetite for new work.”
“I am so excited to see what this cast bring to the material,” said writer Hugo Chiarella. “I can’t quite believe the cast that the team has managed to assemble for this. Naomi and I started writing this piece while we were performing in Les Mis in Sydney, sitting in the green room of the capital theatre between shows. To think that all these amazing people are now going to be bringing that little idea to life feels quite surreal!”
Composer Naomi Livingston said “It takes a village to raise a child and it is the same for raising a new Australian musical. Hugo and I have been spoilt by the immense talent, care and creativity of the people involved in the journey of our little show. We are so thrilled to have the creative and production team we have, not to mention a really exciting cast! It’s been a dream to have all these people come together to bring our show to life!”
“Evie May came to New Musicals Australia in its infancy, but it was already a compelling story that was being well told, and clearly displayed the incredible writing talents of Hugo Chiarella and Naomi Livingston, said Head of New Musicals Australia Neil Gooding. “It has been very exciting to not only nurture both Hugo and Naomi as writers, but also to watch their show develop and mature into the version of Evie May that we are now ready to showcase to audiences.”
