Cabaret De ParisCabaret was invented for restaurants and nightclubs – a place where you could have your fill of food and feathers. I always imagined dim light shielding cheap labels on the wine that was liberally consumed in between discussions of the world on and off the stage. Cabaret De Paris has no dinner option and the audience is no longer debating politics between can-cans. Instead we sit in a very orderly fashion and we are rewarded with a glorious array of Parisian cabaret, burlesque, pole dancing and a touch of circus. The glitz and glamour are plentiful yet retaining a thin thread of the old cabaret tying the show together. In the dark you can envisage your companions as a table of poets and artists waving thick smoke from their eyes as they get distracted by the flash of a beautiful thigh.

Cabaret De Paris combines both the old and the new Cabaret and it’s the music that does it. The diverse score dips into pools of sultry sounds before plunging into loud fast dance music. The two aural worlds cavort with each other as if heedless of the Cabaret they are creating on the stage.

The costumes, designed by Cathie Boyd, were bedazzling and the feathers, oh the feathers. They seemed to come from a bird Ronald Dahl imagined. They danced with the cast and around the cast and really were everything you wanted from a Parisian Cabaret costume. The bodies that wore them were talented and gorgeous and such a fun to watch.

This journey to Paris is lined not only with Cabaret but also with other performers that will mostly dazzle. Mysteriaque are spectacular to watch. Their magical illusions and acrobatic dancing are breathtaking. These two mix the glitter and glam of fashion and the strength and power of some heart-stopping dance moves and everything in between.

Duban Nickol is, for want of a better word, a clown. One with a dash of dingy wine bar as well as glitzy casino about him. He started off slapstick, dropping things, walking into walls and being intentionally clumsy and subtly developed his act and his finale was quite extraordinary the likes of which I have never seen before.  

Marissa Burgess was an excellent host for the evening and it is easy to see how she got the title of longest serving star in the Moulin Rouge’s 120 year history. Cabaret De Paris is a fantastic show that will leave you wishing you had more feather boas.
