The Cat in the Hat is playing these school holidays at QPAC. It’s a fun filled show that will keep the kids entertained as they laugh at the silly antics of the Cat, Thing 1 and Thing 2. Adults in the audience, who are fond of or remember Dr. Seuss’s penchant for rhyming and the ridiculous, will also delight in watching this much loved and classic children’s story brought to life on the stage.
This production remains very true to the original picture book, with the text from the book serving as the script for the show. The costumes and set are a vivid and wonderful 3D representation of Dr Seuss’s unique cartoon style right down to each ink line, which adds to the whimsy of this production. One of the best design aspects overall is the soundtrack. It works brilliantly to capture and hold the attention of the children with its quirky mix of sound effects and original music that accompany the Cat, Thing 1 and Thing 2’s chaos. The Cat’s antics are a definite winner with the kids as they will be kept thoroughly amused with each new game he has up his sleeve. Another favourite with the audience is the goldfish in the bowl, especially his journey back into his bowl at the end of the show. While the performance felt a little sluggish initially, (this did act as a mirror to show how Sally and her older brother who narrates must have felt on that rainy day) once the Cat arrives and he makes his presence known by giving the audience a very cheeky meow, the action on stage keeps the kids 100% engaged.
Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat produced by the National Theatre of Great Britain on at QPAC and performed by an all Australian cast is definitely worth seeing these school holidays. The rhyme resonates beautifully for all and is backed by an excellent soundtrack. However most of all, the eccentric and playful mischief the Cat creates for the children and the goldfish is guaranteed to have your kids talking and giggling about his silliness well after the show is over.
