Ballet RevolucionThe splendid Ballet Revolución, from Cuba, is back in town. After their highly successful 2011 tour, they have returned with a new and dazzling program from a wide range of folkloric, indigenous, Spanish, African, cabaret and classical influences, as well as Prince, Sting, Usher and Ricky Martin. The dancers’ skills are equal to the challenge of this music, and their versatility is astounding.

The program begins with a beautiful pas de deux, next an exciting cumbanchero (Cuban dance), then the exhilarating mambo Lola, then On the Floor, a version of Rodrigo’s Concerto de Aranjuéz, Roxanne, Purple Rain, and (my favourite) She Bangs. Many of the numbers are performed in black, or at least dark, clothes, and She Bangs stood out for its bright mood, as much as its other breezy qualities.

The sheer athleticism in the astonishing leaps, precise changes of pace and rhythm, and delight in performing are quite infectious. While all numbers are well done, special mention must be made of the ensemble, formation dances. The use of clapping, body percussion and cries (even words, at times) takes us away from the ‘silent dancer’ convention, reminds us of the African call-and-response background, and lets us get to know the dancers better too. Good to see humour on dancers’ faces, as well as in their bodies.

The dancers are backed by a brilliant 6-piece band and two friendly, versatile vocalists. The producers, the two choreographers and all involved have done a great job, and this show should not be missed.
