True festivities traditionally involve much wine and song. If your idea of a perfect way to conclude a night out is a good old fashioned sing-along, New York style, hosted by a fun entertainer playing beloved show tunes with flair and pizzazz, then go to Late Night PIano Bar. Hosted by the immensely personable Trevor Jones, Late Night Piano Bar starts at 10.30 and goes on until, well, late. I can’t tell you what time it finished because I was enjoying myself too much to notice. Late Night Piano Bar is a silly, fun, immensely enjoyable night of Broadway, pop and jazz favourites presented by Butterfly Club regular Jones, an adorable, professional performer who knows his stuff. You’re In the Arms of an Angel, as they say.
Everyone’s favourite songs including classics like Bohemian Rhapsody and I Will Survive get an outing. For your $15 entry fee you get a couple of drink vouchers and you can get yourself a drink and put the second one, or some cash, into the request jar and Trevor will play your song. The wait staff circulates with request slips making it easy to participate. You can take the stage yourself if you're up to it and other cabaret festival performers are likely to drop in for a song.
Late Night Piano Bar takes place in The Liber Room (behind the South Melbourne library) which has been transformed for the cabaret festival from a place of quiet contemplation and learning to a one of noise and decadence – some of the best fun you can have partying with a crowd. It’s all pretty lovely, happens at just the right time of the evening, and you can get bar snacks as well as drinks. Go: you’ll have a hoot and a half.
